Tilletia caries is a seedborne cereal disease with a high multiplication potential. Instead of seeds, bunt kernels are formed which are filled with millions of stinking smut spores. The bunt spores are located on the outside of the grain, on the seed coat. Picture 1: A wheat seed beside a broken bunt kernel with dark brown spores. Picture 2: Dark brown bunt spores seen with the eye. Picture 3: Bunt spores caught in the hair of a wheat seed and on its surface.
